Proper Weather Seals for Garage Doors

Duluth Garage Door Repair

Garage doors are some of the most well-designed pieces of equipment on the planet. This includes both manually and automatically opened garage doors. They require very little maintenance and they also hold up well even after years of use. There really is just one problem area with them. That’s the area around the edges of the garage door where air can transfer from outside to the inside your garage. This can be a big problem if you are trying to heat or cool your garage. There is something you can do about that. You can add proper weather seals to the top, sides and the bottom of your garage door to help stop that flow of air.

Recommended Types of Garage Door Seals

Bottom Seals

Here are some very good seals that will help stop airflow underneath your garage door when it’s closed:

J-Type Seals

These bottom seals are very easy to install because they only use a single-channel retainer. As the name indicates, they work by making a J-shaped seal on each side of the garage door.

T-Type Seals

Here is another decent single-channel garage door seal that works well if you do not live in extremely hot or cold areas. They form an inverted ‘T’ shape on both sides of a garage door when it’s closed.

Beaded Seals

These are the absolute best types of seals to use on the bottom of a garage door. They are a sturdy double-channel seal that the garage door slots nicely into when it’s closed. Beaded garage door seals do a great job stopping airflow under the door in even periods of extreme heat or cold.

Top and Side Seals

Here are some great seals to use on the top and sides of your garage door to help insulate your garage better:

Brush weather sealĀ

If you have a sectional garage door you may want to highly consider using brush style seals on it to stop airflow around the top and bottom of the door. They do not form a weather-tight seal but they are flexible, so they fit good and do not wear out so quickly.

PVC top and side weather sealĀ

Here is a great type of seal to use on solid garage doors. The flexible PVC they are made of does a nice job of stopping airflow around the top and bottom of any garage door. The drawback to them is they are not very flexible so they need to be replaced on almost a yearly basis.
